Kabul – During their meeting in Kabul, Afghanistan, on Monday (29/1), President Joko Widodo and President Ashraf Ghani of Afghanistan agreed that peace-building process in Afghanistan required a solid foundation of economic development in the country. Peace-building and economic development must go hand-in-hand.
“Without peace, there will be no prosperity. Without prosperity, peace will not be sustainable. Therefore, as we continue to strengthen peace-building process, economic cooperation has to be strengthened accordingly,” stated by President Joko Widodo.
President Joko Widodo also highlighted the need to increase trade volume between the two countries. He acknowledged the enormous potentials to boost trade volume.
“I have asked my ministers to push business-to-business contacts,” the President said.
Last year, more than one hundred Afghan entrepreneurs attended Trade Expo Indonesia, which resulted in a USD 1,1 million worth of transaction. As a follow up, President Joko Widodo has promised to send a business delegation to Afghanistan in the first quarter of this year.
Indonesia’s support for peace-building in Afghanistan has also been provided through capacity building. Indonesia is committed to continue advancing capacity building programs for the people of Afghanistan including in the field of women empowerment, Small & Medium Enterprises, health, law enforcement, and good governance.
“Indonesia is ready to grant 100 scholarships for students from Afghanistan,” Presiden Joko Widodo added.
President Ghani conveyed his appreciation to Indonesia for its contribution in the peace process in Afghanistan including through the context of Peace-Building.
